    Civic body plans to decentralize waste management

    Chennai Corporation plans to decentralise waste management

    Corporation Commissioner G Prakash gives an overview of Chennai Corporation’s blueprint for reduction of the quantum of waste sent to landfills under a new decentralized system to be implemented city-wide in the coming six months.

    • The first six months, the goal will be to move to 100% decentralisation for wet waste by building required infrastructure.
    • The city produces roughly 4500 metric tons of waste in a day out of which 2000 metric tons are wet waste.
    • 400 Amma Canteens operational in the city collectively produce 500 kg of wet waste and this is composted in the same ward.
    • 1806 Anganwadis have been identified where water can be handles inset through small bio-digesters.
