Thiruvanmiyur Resident Redoes The Stormwater Drains In Dr. Radhakrishnan Nagar Main Road

Geeta Padmanabhan and the colony's efforts have improved the Dr Radhakrishnan Nagar Main Road’s storm water drain infrastructure.

Product or concept

Geeta Padmanabhan, member of RMSM (Dr Radhakrishnan Nagar, Malaviya Avenue, Sivakamipuram, Marundeeswarara Avenue) Resident welfare association amongst others was one of the main forces in revamping Dr Radhakrishnan Nagar Main Road’s storm water drain infrastructure to prevent flooding during monsoon.

Problem being solved

Increasing city’s public infrastructure resilience against extreme rains.

Process or technology involved

Dr Radhakrishnan Nagar Main Road which has a storm water drain below it, is a one kilometre stretch.

Challenge: The junction boxes were set up perpendicular on the platform. People had to walk around it. The storm water drain was designed in such a way that it snaked around these junction boxes. There was an old transformer which was blocking the footpath, surrounded by garbage.

  • An architect couple from the neighborhood – N Deviprasad and Kavitha Prasad – played a major role by designing the road and changing it in accordance with the corporation’s plan.
  • Junction box that blocked the path was shifted to smooth flow of water in the storm water drain.
  • A transformer blocking the path was also shifted to a safer place and fenced.
  • Several other portions were redone, cleaned of debris and silts.
  • New structure was constructed at the S-bend to ensure smooth flow of water. The footpath runs on top, facilitating walking on this busy road.
  • The storm water drain is now well connected and flows to the macro drain, finally reaching the Buckingham Canal.

Sustainability benefits

  • Reduces the accumulation of water on the roads during monsoon season.
  • Well-developed footpath allows people to use the same for pedestrian walks, hence reducing safety concerns of walking on the roads.
