Study of measures related to urban water security and conservation
Recycling water Chennai’s only hope
A recent study by Anna University shows that recycling and reusing of sewage is one of the most reliable and eco-friendly solutions for Chennai and up to 50 per cent of the water needs of 2050 could be met this way.
The city’s water needs are currently met by four major reservoirs in the outskirts and two tanks. The other sources are desalination plants, extracted ground water and sewage treatment plants.
Desalination plants in the city come at an environmental cost - and this is seen near the Nemmeli Desalination plant where there is an increased salt content around the plant.
If 60% of waste water is treated, it could help the city become self reliant in the long run.
